This museum exhibits Ukiyo-e prints and paintings produced in Osaka in the Edo period. Emerged in the Edo period, one of its attractions is that it is expressed colorfully by printing each color sheet by sheet.

Various colors are used in Ukiyo-e paintings including ink-black which is used to draw outlines. At the end of the Edo period, chemical colors were used as well as botanical and mineral colors. By knowing the color we can also learn the history of Ukiyo-e.

In this feature exhibition, we focus on “the color red” in Ukiyo-e. Enjoy various kinds of the color red and a range of expressions of “red” in Ukiyo-e.
